With four decades of experience, celebrity hairstylist Albert Nico is now one of the most famous names in Malaysia. As L’Oreal Professionel’s long serving Artistic Ambassador, Nico’s work has been featured in magazines all over the world, including Vogue Italia.
So, who better than Nico as the first maestro to grace myeppo’s Ask An Expert column? He has several tricks and trades up his debonair sleeve, and is ready to dispense ace advice on all matters coiffure-related.
“Nowadays, a hairdresser is not merely a hairdresser; they have to have the complete package. We have to present ourselves well, communicate effectively with clients and update ourselves with the latest trends and technology,” explains Nico in his hair salon located in Fahrenheit 88, Kuala Lumpur.
“To be hairdresser is not easy job. People ask me, how can you be in this industry for so many years? My answer is simple: You have to love what you’re doing. After all this time, I am still so passionate about my craft,” enthuses Nico. “It gives me great satisfaction to retain the same clientele from day one; they keep coming back to me and trust me completely with their hair.”
Nico’s journey to the top of his industry has been charted before in When Dreams Come Alive, a self-published book in 2012 which contains his memoirs and photographs of his hairstyling masterpieces.
In 2018, he released coffee table book The Soul Of Portrait which features black-and-white portraits of personalities such as activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, supermodel Amber Chia and beauty queen Datin Elaine Daly.
Asked about his greatest accomplishment, Nico answers: “It’s that I didn’t waste my time. Honestly, I am very happy and grateful for what I have now, and I want to be able to help others.”
