With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, some people are juggling with mental stress, anxiety and depression. For Jan Chin, she’s a big believer that a positive attitude can impact both physical and mental health.
In person, the beauty queen-turned-TV personality is someone who walks the talk. With 46K followers on Instagram (@janjanjanchin), she is a popular presence on social media as well as local television, co-hosting 8TV variety show ‘Living Delight’ with Desmond Tey.
In 2004, Jan participated in the Miss Astro Chinese International and won third place. In 2014, she was amongst the five most popular female artists at the 3rd Golden Vision Awards, a feat she repeated in 2017.
Adapting to life in the new normal, Jan says: “It is no longer possible to return to the way it was before the epidemic, as everyone must practice social distancing. We cannot change the world until we change ourselves.”
Married to local menswear designer Key Ng, Jan also started her spiritual life coaching business. In the following Q&A, she opens up to myeppo….
How do you define beauty?
Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. While external appearance is important, it is more vital to manage all aspects of life. I think “beauty” is about self-discipline and wisdom, a way of self-cognition and love for oneself. And having integrity makes a woman even more beautiful.
Everyone has their own unique beauty. I think everyone exudes beauty from the inside, such as confidence, self-love and wisdom. Interpersonal relationships and other aspects of life can also reveal a person’s beauty.
What are you currently busy with in terms of work?
To be honest, I am quite lucky! There were many TV shows have been cancelled due to MCO last year, but the 8TV show “Living Delight” which I am hosting is not affected. Surprisingly, I have been getting more job offers during this pandemic – whether it’s online event host, sponsored post on social media and commercial shooting. As for my acting career, I have not been filming for a while, but I had an opportunity to play the main role in a TV movie titled “Bonus Vacation”, which was shown during Chinese New Year this year.
In addition, I started a spiritual coaching business since last December. I have doubled up my commitment to my spiritual growth for several years, and I have successfully attained a certification through an accredited programme. I made my debut as a spiritual trainer at healing academy called OneNess Concept. My course is mainly helping people find out who they are and connect them to their life purpose, guiding them to find inner happiness, peace and harmony while supporting them on their journey to find their own sense of wholeness. I have just completed several seminar tours in KL, Penang and Johor throughout this year.
What are your must-have beauty products?
For makeup, I use Dior. For cleanser and sun block, I use Sisley Paris. For toner and moisturiser, I use Cle de Peau. My favourite serum is DeekSha Flower Essence Serum. It contains more than the average moisturising hydration and repairing nourishment, and also helps to enhance your radiant self from the inside out.
When you have free time, what forms of wellness do you indulge in?
I have always loved outdoor recreation, especially backpacking, hiking, hill walking and mountain biking. Exposure to nature not only makes me feel better emotionally, but it also contributes to my physical wellbeing and spiritual renewal.
Since we are not encouraged to travel under MCO, I do hip workout at home. Perspiration is a kind of detoxification, which will stimulate hormones, hence our body and mind will be more relaxed and balanced.
What can people do to care for their mental health?
Personally, I practice meditation at home. With the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, most individuals are juggling with mental stress, anxiety and depression. Studies demonstrate that a positive attitude can impact both physical and mental health. To be positive, we must use each day as a challenge to get away from negative affirmations. Mental health is so important.
What are your plans for the rest of 2021?
The epidemic does not seem to be improving, and the situation is getting worse. Plenty of resolutions in my mind have been disrupted. So, I am going with the flow and letting nature take its course. I will focus more on my spiritual life coaching business. I hope that I can have a better integration in all aspects, hoping to bring the best coaching quality to all my students.
What’s your advice to others who want to enter showbiz?
Follow your heart, it knows the way. If you feel that your current conditions are fully in line with your acting career, and you are sure about pursuing showbiz, believe in yourself and go for it!
The truth is you do not know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed. I always believe that there is no limit to what I can accomplish, except the limitations I place in my mind.
Broaden your horizon to create your own history. If you are really interested in showbiz, then work hard to improve your talent and professional skills. Work hard in silence and let success make the noise!
What’s your life motto?
Before the age of 36, I felt every bit of life must be taken seriously! It came from my perfectionism, but it often left me in a state of oppression and I could never be satisfied with myself. After all, there is no such thing as “perfection” in the world.
After I started to get in touch with spiritual and energy healing, I realised that life is just a journey, and we are all here to experience life. Regardless of good or bad, every encounter in our life is considered a gift and learning experience.
