Skincare is confusing! There are so many options and resources out there that it’s hard to know where to start.

Well, fret not, young one. This guide will tell you all you need to know to start with a basic skincare routine to help you achieve your skin goals.

First Things First – Know Your Skin Type

It’s essential to know your skin type first, but why?

If you don’t know your skin type you may end up using the wrong types of products. This can make your skin condition worse instead of better!

When relating it to skincare: YOUR SKIN TYPE MATTERS!

Once you know your skin type, you are then able to choose suitable products and avoid worsening your existing skin issues or creating new ones.

What are the different skin types?

  • Combination: Shiny or oily on your T-zone area, (your forehead, nose, and chin). But, dry or flaky on the outer cheeks area.
  • Oily: Slick and shiny all over your face.
  • Dry: Skin feels rough and tight. Skin can also be flakey, and you can feel skin flaking off when you rub a dry finger over your face.
  • Normal: If you don’t experience any of the above, congratulate yourself on winning the genetic lottery! Normal skin is well-balanced and the easiest to maintain.

How to determine your skin type

Step 1: Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser

Step 2: Don’t apply any products – let your bare face air dry.

Step 3: Wait for one hour after cleansing your face.

Step 4: Refer to the descriptions of the different skin types above. Now, look at your face in the mirror and feel your skin with your fingers. Does it feel tight? Rough? Smooth? Painful? Oily? Take note of the areas where you feel this and compare it with the descriptions.

Alternately, you can try the myeppo skin quiz. The quiz results tell you your skin type and recommend specific products based on your personal skin type. Understanding your skin type allows for more personalised product advice, which can help you be confident in knowing what products are good for you and what may cause side effects.

I Know My Skin Type – Now What?

Right now, if you are just starting — all you need is a cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen in that order!

Step 1: Cleanse with a Cleanser

The cleanser is designed to clean your skin from dirt, impurities, pollution and makeup so that you can move to the next step with a clean canvas. This unclogs pores and allows your skin to better absorb the ingredients in the products in the next steps of your routine.

Using a water-based cleanser that doesn’t dry out the skin is the bare minimum. If you are a heavy makeup or sunscreen wearer, it can be beneficial to do a double cleanse by first using an oil cleanser then a water-based cleanser.

The oil cleanser dissolves the makeup/sunscreen, which can be water-resistant. The water-based cleaner cleans away impurities, dirt, sweat and pollution that may have built up on your skin over the day (especially in our hot and humid weather!).

Step 2: Hydrate with a Moisturiser

Never skip moisturiser because the combination of emulsion and water will replenish and keep the moisture in your skin. There are several types of moisturisers for reasons, and you need to use one designed for your skin type.

Step 3: Protect with a Sunscreen

An often overlooked step, sunscreen deflects harsh UV rays and is especially important in tropical climates. Sunscreen prevents sun damage such as fine lines, dark spots and uneven skin texture and skin tone. Don’t ever skip putting on sunscreen in the morning, and reapply it every two hours. Your skin will thank you!

Do I Need Different Routines for Morning and Night?

It depends.

Some people have different routines day and night, which is fine (no pressure) since our skin loves to absorb all the goodies.

A morning routine is designed to help protect your skin to face the day. Dirt, makeup, UV rays, moisture loss and bacteria are just some of the things that your skin will be exposed to as you go about your day. So, you need to make sure your face is thoroughly cleansed, protected and moisturised. That’s why people lean towards lightweight moisturiser that hydrates or sometimes a multipurpose sunscreen that kill two birds in one stone.

A night routine focuses on repairing or addressing the damage done during the day. At night, people tend to go for more nourishing moisturisers, anti-ageing products and double cleansing. It goes from protecting in the morning to repair mode at nighttime, so having a good skincare routine can support and maximise the skin renewal process and top up the moisture to compensate for nightly water loss.

As a starting point, however, there is nothing wrong with using similar products for morning and night — just maybe pass on using the sunscreen at night!

When Should I Add More Steps Once I Have My Basic Skincare Routine?

Remember that ‘Less is more’, and these three steps are enough to start.

Once you have a solid basic routine, you can start adding steps to target your remaining skin concerns more specifically. You can expect best results from adding steps if:

✅ I know my skin type and what my skin needs

✅ I know how to cleanse my skin properly

✅ I wear sunscreen daily

✅ I consistently do my basic skincare routine.

Nail all four?
