With over two decades of experience behind her, Joanne Lim has worked with countless magazines and executed creative projects with numerous shopping malls, department stores and international and local brands.
As an artistic and creative director, she lives to curate and strongly believes that if one loves her job, she does not have to work a day in her life. Going with that philosophy, the industry stalwart has always found creative ways of executing a vision, be it store interior or design or product packaging.
Her latest project is a workscape area called S•P•A•C•E, which is an acronym for Styled Photography + Artistic Curation Extraordinaire. This ambitious space – located in Section 19, Petaling Jaya – encapsulates Joanne’s own design house, photography studio and workscape area.

How do you achieve a work-life balance?
Love your job and you never have to work a day in your life so there is no real attempt to balance. When I am at work, I make sure it is fun and I am enjoying the process. When I am at play, such as reading up on a new city, I think about whether it would be nice to shoot there for my projects.
How have you adapted to life in the new norm?
Going with the flow and making the best out of what we have is very important. Learning something new online feels refreshing each time.
We can be stuck at home and feeling claustrophobic but most crucial is to find and achieve your peace of mind within. I read a lot of books and magazines during the pandemic but I make sure I have nice scents and candles around me.
What has been the biggest lesson learnt during the pandemic?
That not all is lost and there are always silver linings. Everything happens for a (good) reason. Where work is concerned, I discovered that nothing is impossible especially as I moved to my new studio amidst it all. Of course, this was made possible by my very capable team.
What advice would you give to those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Passion, persistency and perseverance.
What is your beauty routine like?
I need a facial every three weeks. A good hair wash with a nice head massage is crucial for me whenever I think about work … which is most of the time! I love masks and they are perfect for hydration.
What are your must-have products?
Talika Eye Therapy Patch, which is the best eye patch ever! It reduces puffiness in just an hour or two. Uka Wake Up! Shampoo, which literally does its job! Omorovicza Blue Diamond Concentrate, which helps to iron out wrinkles and fine lines. I am into Frederic Malle scents; L’Eau D’Hiver is my favourite, next to Cologne Indelebile and Bigarade Concentree. Nothing like different scents to accentuate the right moods. To curb nausea, I carry Aesop Ginger Flight Therapy with me at all times.
Away from work, what forms of wellness do you indulge in?
Massages, anytime of the day including those during hair wash.
What are your goals for the rest of 2021?
To continue building and expanding my portfolio. I am also currently working on my avant grade pop up store and my family’s cookbook. Stay tuned!
