Bella Rahim is a woman of many talents. She is an actor, fashion show producer, plus size model, commercial, print and voice talent, stylist and performing arts educator.

Those who watched Train To Busan: Peninsula would have been pleasantly surprised to note Bella’s appearance in the Korean zombie blockbuster. “That was an opportunity of a lifetime!” enthused Bella, who played Major Jane, a soldier from Malaysia.

Recently, Bella formed new film company Srikandi Seni with a group of friends. “I joined forces with five talented women. We aim to create content that empowers marginalised voices in Malaysia.”Srikandi Seni’s first short film received Best Screenplay Award at G-Short 2021 Film Festival organised by George Town Festival in Penang in July. The short film, titled Senyap-Senyap Harimau, stars Bella and Cat.

In the following Q&A, we find out more about the multi-talented Bella, who received Best Supporting Actress for International Short Film Category from Cosmo Film Festival India last year.

We will be celebrating Merdeka tomorrow (Aug 31). What does Merdeka mean to you?

Merdeka means everything to me. My dad survived the Japanese occupation, and I still see in his eyes the horrors he went through to protect our land for independence.

For me, it’s the freedom to stand on my own two feet and create art through theatre and filmmaking; to strive for freedom of speech and the space to speak my truth. I want to be able to say that I belong to a country where I will leave my mark and have future generations continue our legacy.

What’s the biggest lesson learnt during the pandemic?

I learned the flexibility to adapt to new challenges that arise. Always save for a rainy day. Be responsible for my actions, and don’t put others at risk. Leave my comfort zone, and take on new kinds of work opportunities.

How have you adapted to the new norm?

I went through a series of different moods. At first, I caught up on sleep and binged on Netflix, as I don’t usually have the time to truly rest. When the opportunity came, I volunteered under MODA Malaysia as a frontliner to pack PPE sets and cut plastic aprons for distribution to healthcare workers.

Now, I have settled into a routine: waking up in the morning, practising my vocals, learning French and eating healthier food.

At the end of every day, I work out, followed by a virtual movie night with Melinda Looi where we have a lot of fun talking about the costumes, acting and characters in the movie.

What is your beauty routine like?

My beauty routine begins with facial wash and toner. My skin is oily – not that I’m complaining, it has kept me ageless! I only use moisturiser when needed. Before bed, I use facial wash and serum. I do a facial mask every week, and have recently added jade guasa massages two to three times a week.

What are your must-have products?

From Clarins, I like Doux Nettoyant Gommant Express, Lotion Tonique Iris Sans Alcool Peaux Mixtes Ou Grasses and Soin Complet Jeunesse Multi Regenerant Yeux.

From Eve Lom, I use Serum Hydratant Intensif and Radiance Transforming Masque Eclat. I also like Mediheal N.M.F. Aquaring Ampoule Mask and Sheseido Perfect UV Protector SPF 50+ PA++++; it is very weather resistant!

When you have free time, what forms of wellness do you indulge in?

Thai aromatherapy massages! I am half-Thai, so I must return to my roots occasionally. Thai people give the BEST massages!

Because of the pandemic, many people are struggling with mental health issues. In your opinion, what is the best way to overcome it?

Ever since the pandemic started, I tried to distract myself. I was doing too many things to avoid addressing the issue until one day, I found it difficult to breathe. I was having an anxiety attack! I reached out to a friend, and she helped calm me down. She gave me a good piece of advice: “You are not your anxiety.”

When you are by yourself, your negative thoughts may be amplified. Sometimes things are not as bad as they seem at the moment. Reach out.

Human connections are important. Not just for yourself, but for other people too. If you think of a friend, just call! We are all in this together.

However, if the struggle doesn’t go away, please seek professional help.

What are your plans for the rest of 2021?

To be ready for anything. If the lockdown is lifted, I shall be fit and ready to take on projects. If it doesn’t, I maintain my daily routine.

Proudest accomplishments over the years?

To have played a role in Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula! That was an opportunity of a lifetime. I also co-created and performed Didn’t Know That About You in Norway with Karen Houge and David Tann of The Undercover Theatre, Norway.

I was humbled to receive the Best Supporting Actress Award for International Short Film Category from Cosmo Film Festival India in 2020.

Recently, my friends and I formed Srikandi Seni, a new film company, I joined forces with five talented women: Mien Ly, Ineza Roussille, Cat Brogan, Yoyo and Abby Latiff. We aim to create content that empowers marginalised voices in Malaysia.

What do you love most about acting?

I love to be part of great storytelling. Every role I’ve come to embody is such an honour. My aim is to continue to do justice to all my characters.

One day, I hope to bring to life a character who is heard and known across the world. A woman who creates acceptance, understanding and empathy with the audience.

What’s your motto in life?

Train your mind to see the good in every situation.
