Christ Alson has been a professional makeup artist (MUA) for five years, and the passion started when Alson encountered fashion magazines at the tender age of seven. From then on, Alson’s biggest inspiration was to be involved in the beauty industry.
In September last year, Alson delved into the beauty content creator scene by sharing Euro-American styled makeup on Instagram, gaining a steady following. “Coming from a traditional Chinese family, starting out as a makeup artist had its challenges. Over the years, I worked hard to prove myself and chase my dream to become a MUA and beauty content creator,” said Alson.
What is your secret to success?
Believe in yourself, work hard and be passionate in whatever you’re doing. Stop questioning yourself and have a strong mindset. Ignore people who keep saying: “I don’t think this job will suit you and I think this or that is better for you”. Don’t let the opinions of other people affect your decisions. Period.
Growing up, who is your role model?
When I was 16, I met a makeup artist named Aiko. She is a close friend of my cousin, and she noticed that I was interested in makeup. That’s how my career began and I started to follow her whenever she has a client, so I learn a lot from her.
How do you achieve a work-life balance?
I try to schedule my work between being a makeup artist and blogger to have enough time to create quality content. I value quality rather than quantity. On a daily basis, I film more than one content and I schedule it ahead of time if things get busy.
What advice would you give to those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t give up and work hard. Do not panic, ever! Try to figure out what makes you stand out as a makeup artist, be passionate and believe in yourself. Do what makes you feel comfortable without hurting others, and that is all that matters.
What is your beauty routine like?
I have oily acne-prone skin so I make sure my skincare products don’t contain paraben, artificial colour and strong acid active ingredients. For morning, I use face wash, toner, ampoules and sunscreen. For night, my routine starts with removing makeup then face wash, tone, ampoules, moisturiser and eye cream.
Try to understand your skin better by doing more research to avoid damaging your skin.
What are the beauty products you cannot live without?
Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, Isntree Spot Saver Mugwort Cream, Rovectin Activating Treatment Lotion and Cosrx Advanced Snail Mucin 96 Power Essence.
Away from work, what forms of wellness do you indulge in?
Music! Japanese City Pop is everything to me because most of my content ideas came from the 80s! Even though I’m exhausted, I will always love doing my artwork. The final result gives happiness to me.
What are your goals for the rest of 2021?
I hope the Covid-19 pandemic will end soon so we can all travel!
What has been the biggest lesson learnt during the pandemic?
Saving money! No matter what, we need to make sure to have an emergency fund. The Covid-19 was everyone’s wake-up call, and we never know what’s going to happen next. During this pandemic, I was stressed out from not being able to work. Thankfully, during that period of time, I got through it with my passion for makeup, and that’s when my career as a content creator and beauty blogger started.
What is your greatest accomplishment in life?
My most outstanding achievement is knowing what I wanted to do, be passionate about it and be strong enough to fight off negativity!
