Styling them in a well fitted suit, helping them to brand themselves, as well as boosting their self-confidence. That’s priceless,” enthuses Arzmy, who is based in Sarawak.
In the following Q&A, he shares more about his personal and work goals….
Tell us a bit more about Gavroche. What are your plans for the brand next year?
Gavroche was established in 2014 and ever since then, we made appearances and expanded in every sort of platform. Gavroche is synonym of a man’s essential wardrobe, we are not only creating suits but we are also helping you to brand your lifestyle through our brand. We have participated in fashion weeks both local and international but for the future, we would like to take it to the next level by making a makeover channel hosted by me. This idea is inspired by Tom Ford. It’s a refreshing idea how someone’s appearance can change with just their wardrobe and styling and I think this is what Malaysia needs to boost our fashion scene especially for men. And I’m also looking to channel it to fragrance.
What inspires you in your work?
I’m a very meticulous and perfectionist person, everyone around me knows that. When I want something, I will work for it and make it happen. What inspire me in my work are my persistency and perseverance. I have dreams and goals to achieve, and I always visualize, brainstorm with my team how to expand our brand. I’m inspired by the essence of personality being put into the brand, like Tom Ford or Dolce & Gabbana, how they speak through their fashion.
What’s the biggest lesson learnt during the pandemic?
It was unprecedented, tough yet refreshing in a way. I have been living my life fast-paced before the pandemic, going to events back-to-back, flying here and there to do my networking. And when the pandemic hit, it was like being reborn. Especially in events, everything was put on hold. And at first, I have to admit it was strange being at home 24/7 but as time goes by, it’s not that bad after all. What I learned about this pandemic is that this is the time where I can reflect back to what’s really important. My family, loved ones, our health. Workwise, everything was online. I did my meetings through Zoom calls, and that was an experience I can never forget. The pandemic taught me to cherish the little things and to be grateful just to be alive. Carpe diem. Seize the moment.
What is your grooming routine like?
As an image stylist and personal branding strategist, taking care of my appearance and self-grooming is like my #1 essential to start my day. Now that I grew my hair longer, I spent a good 15 mins styling, blow-drying my hair and 30 mins for my face. Moisturizer, toner, beard oil, hair gel and just keeping everything simple but fresh.
What are your must-have grooming products?
Lumin Charcoal Cleanser for Men, Dior Sauvage Aftershave Balm, Kiehl’s Herbal Extract Toner and L’Oreal Hyaluronic Serum.
When you have free time, what forms of wellness do you indulge in?
I’m not a hardcore gym-freak but I do workout alternate days to keep my body lean, toned and in shaped. Mostly on cardio, lifting and curling weights. To make sure I look good in my suits (laughs).
What gets you down and what do you normally do to get out of a negative situation?
I seldom get beaten down because I always uplift myself, I focus on positivity rather than dwell on negativity. But that doesn’t mean I was never at my lowest; as humans, we all gone through that. And for me personally, what get me down is when my hard work is not appreciated. I pick myself up and tell myself it’s normal life routine and you just have to keep rising and prove to yourself you have got what it takes to shine, even with some people putting you down. Use that energy as a fuel to work on myself more. At the end of the day, nothing beats the satisfaction of self-belief.
What do you love most about your chosen profession?
I love my job! I love what I do. It’s literally me. I’m one of the lucky people who get to make a living out of their passion. It makes me feel good when I make my clients feel good. Styling them in a well fitted suit, helping them to brand themselves, as well as boosting their self-confidence. That’s priceless.
What is your advice to younger people who want to follow in your footsteps?
In Sarawak, I’m part of the youth development advocate where I help them by creating opportunities and platforms such as events and conferences to shape their direction. For the youth who are not well exposed, you have to be at the ‘surface’ and ‘out there’. The fundamentals have to start within yourselves, what direction, goals and dreams you have and working towards them. My advice for starters, have a role model and learn from them, believe in yourself and just go for it. Never question yourself and your capabilities. The foundation has to be strong; no one is entitled to speak for you and you don’t need anyone’s validation to be yourself. Reach for the stars and you are born for great things.
What is your proudest achievement thus far?
I don’t consider myself as really “there” yet and my success story has many more years to come. But I can say my proudest achievement thus far would be starting up my own company and be the CEO at the age of 25. I’ve always believed that I’m not the typical conventional 9-5 person, my entrepreneurial spirit has always been in my blood since I was young. I have more plans and goals to achieve in future and everyday I’m thankful for the experience that made me who I am today.
