DECIEM, the company which owns cult brand The Ordinary, has announced price increases from February 2022 and Malaysia is not excluded from this.
This article will briefly explain why they increased prices and how it will affect The Ordinary Malaysia sellers and buyers.
How Are DECIEM and The Ordinary Related?
DECIEM has been around since 2013 and were a small group of people with one common goal—clearing up the beauty industry. Over the last eight years, being the parent company to brands such as NIOD, Hylamid, HIF and The Ordinary, they did it.
The Ordinary has decoded the most transformative skincare ingredients like retinol, niacinamide, and salicylic acid. The fans also love its ease to use and how affordable the products are. Most of them are under RM60.
Why Did The Ordinary Increase In Price?
Unfortunately, you will notice a price increase across most of the products.
In an Instagram post on 18 January 2022, DECIEM explained why they increased prices across all their brands, including The Ordinary. This boiled down to two main reasons – the increasing cost of raw ingredients, packaging and sustainability initiatives, and increased pay for their staff.
“While our pricing has remained flat since our inception, the cost of raw ingredients, packaging and shipping has increased,” wrote DECIEM.
They explained further: “We’ve also been focused on making our products and processes as environmentally friendly as possible and have absorbed increasing costs over the past few years.”
One fun fact you should know about the company is that the ecosystem is completely integrated. Each product is formulated in their lab and bottled in their production facility. It allows them to have control over innovation and quality. Hence DECIEM has a big team of good people they want to take care of.
“As the cost of living increases, we need to continue to compensate our people well for the incredible work,” explained DECIEM on the Instagram post.
How This Affects Malaysian Buyers and Sellers
1. Malaysian Sellers of The Ordinary Will Likely Have to Increase their Price as Well
The price increase is worldwide, so Malaysia will not be immune. As many sellers in Malaysia import stock overseas, they will likely pass on the price increase. On average, expect to see The Ordinary Malaysia e-commerce price increase around RM10 or more.
Additionally, the cost of importing stock into Malaysia has gone up due to the skyrocketing increase in shipping costs. On average, the price of shipping stock internationally has increased between 25% to 50% from a year ago, all thanks to COVID and its impact on the global supply chain. Beauty entrepreneur Liah Yoo explain reasons why a lot of beauty brands will be raising their prices this year in the video below:
While Liah talks about the California Port, the same thing is happening in Port Klang and ports all around the world.
2. It May Be Harder to Get The Ordinary products in Malaysia
We see this possibility because of the recent price increase, and some small sellers might reconsider selling The Ordinary products.
Since The Ordinary currently doesn’t have a direct brand presence in Malaysia, it’s making it hard to secure their products here. A lot of thorough research is needed to ensure that the supplier supplied authentic products at a reasonable price.
3. Fake Versions of The Ordinary Products Might Seem More Tempting
Due to price increases, sellers of fake and inauthentic The Ordinary might become more tempting as their prices will seem even cheaper.
Do not fall into this trap!
If you see The Ordinary in Malaysia being sold for a price that is too good to be true, there is an even higher chance that it may be a fake!
However, it may take a few months for your favourite shop to increase its prices. Many Malaysian sellers had stocked up at the old price before the price increases came in. Once they run out of that stock, they will have to restock at the new, higher supply price – which is when they will increase their selling price.
The bottom line is this. Every Malaysian seller of authentic The Ordinary products sourced from legitimate, authentic sources will most likely increase their price over the next few months.
